I just received an email:

Hi Mbreggar,

Greetings,

I work at Teachable, an online platform that lets people build online schools and we recently came across a school ( https://cardtricks-ebooks.teachable.com   [wink] that is trying to sell a course under your name. I couldn't tell if you had actually created this school. Please let me know as soon as you can if you did so I can take action if necessary.

Thank you,
Athena Bookman
athena+jb@teachable.com
School ID# 417334

I am sharing this with TMF-ers, because neither did I set this online course up myself nor allow them to utilize my books material, etc. I cannot get any other information on this "cardtricks-ebooks.teachable.com" though I guess our pirate "friends" have found a new way to rip off us and the public.

I suspect I have no recourse other than letting the folks at "teachable" know. I just wanted you to be on the lookout.

Michael

Wow. It's great that the platform got in touch with you. At least they're making an attempt. Geez.

FWIW, I tried a couple of Google searches using various strings containing your name, the book title, etc, and the teachable site never popped up. So there's that...

I hate that those of you creative enough to come up with these fantastic effects are subjected to piracy. I can only hope it doesn't stop you, but that's me being purely selfish, I guess.

I see other magicians on the site and a person's name listed as the "instructor", I guess. Peter Duffie trilogy for $99.00. Bet he has no clue. Anyone have an email for him?
I'm going to pass this along to Vanishing Inc. also. Two of their items are listed there for free but it likely will lead to more.

Please do. I left him a PM on the Cafe but he may not check regularly.

I sent Peter an email … we're (obviously) on different Time Zones, but he usually responds to me so I'm sure he'll get it

Considering the fact that Peter said "Thanks, I'll check into it" made me think he was not on-board with them, so it was a good call to contact him.

I sent him Athena's info as you listed it above... Ray probably did as well

Teachable.com has done the right thing. Today's email:

Thank you for clarifying - we have removed the school from our platform and no further action is required on your part.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and please have a good day.

Another possible success story.  I saw that a kid had posted a reveal/tutorial of the "Windmill Change" which is a marketed item.  I respectfully requested that he take it down and explained why.  I think it has been taken down because I did a quick look and did not find it.

Small victories I know, but at least there is some progress.

I confirmed that the "school" appears to have vanished!

In the meantime, another magician is offering a "class" on the same website.  He is a Youtuber, 52 Kards.  It appears to be a course made up of a lot of sleight tutorials.  There are some topics that sound eerily similar to the posts made here and elsewhere by Endersgame.  Probably worth verifying.  I won't be spending the $52.00.

I'm pretty sure 52 Kards is legit.  That was a part of Asad's Kickstarter program and he still offers it today.

52 Kards is a fairly active YouTube "teacher" of card tricks. He's been around for a bit, and I've stumbled across his videos. He seems to have issues with proper crediting, and I have seen him teach tricks that are not open source, but from the handful of times I've watched his vids, he at least seems to care about card magic. And hey, he could be Ender for all we know!!! [wink]

Well spotted, and glad to see some resolution. But it really is like playing Whack a Mole. :0

Paul, you are so right. What I hope is that some are doing this without thinking and when they understand the damage caused they will stop. Then perhaps they will reach out to others now that they know. It could grow and grow. Before anybody says it, I know I'm dreaming, but a lot of great accomplishments began as a dream, right?
