Hi Everyone,

It's that time again! I hope that you're able to join me for a fun time sharing magic with each other.

I've scheduled our next Saturday Session for this weekend, June 17th at 2pm (Pacific). Here's the link to register: https://goo.gl/ptnZDn

All are welcome to join us, but only our Inner Circle members will have access to the video recording.

I hope to see you there!

Take care,

Rudy

Sorry I missed guys.  I ended up going and seeing my dad for Father's day yesterday rather than today.

Rudy: Will the session be accessible to those that registered but didn't attend?

Mike, I had a connection problem so I only saw the very beginning and very end of your O&W presentation ... I look forward to seeing the recording.

I performed Ed Oschmann's "Elmer" trick during the session. It was recently featured in my Card Corner column in The Linking Ring. The similarity to Marlo's Devilish Miracle was mentioned. I wanted to clarify my thoughts on that here:

Devilish Miracle is basically a sucker effect in the style of Dunbury Delusion in that the spectators see (and therefore believe) that their selection is among the cards in a small packet. They are led down "the garden path" and later are "burned" by the fact that this isn't true. Ed was trying to get away from the sucker aspect of DM. In his routine no one is wrong about where the selections are. One selection is removed from the packet of five invisibly and reinserted face down. The magician shows that there's a face down card and looks at it, calling out its name. Then this card is removed invisibly and placed face up in the deck. The packet now has only four cards. These are tabled. The deck is spread showing that the invisible card has become visible in the middle of the deck. Finally, the second selection is removed and placed FD into the tabled packet of four. There are now five cards and the face down card is found to be the second selection.

This totally removes any sucker feel from the effect. It's related to Devilish Miracle in that there are two selections. It's also related to the Biddle Trick and uses Biddle Steals and puts to accomplish the trickery.

Hope this clarifies what I was trying to say during the session. Try this trick out on lay people. I think you'll find that it flows really well and garners a solid reaction.

Hi Robin,

I think that the O&W bit fell fairly flat. Maybe if I had believed in it, I could have sold it. Harry Lorayne would have made it a miracle!

I had a feeling that something there was worth pursuing, but sometimes that feeling is wrong.

I dug Pseudometry out of Apocalypse. Cool item! Thanks for pointing that out Rudy and thanks to Johnny for showing it.

I'm thinking that the idea I proposed for downjogging the three mates works pretty well. Someone pointed out that it may feel different than calling out specific numbers and counting to them. I just went through it a couple of times and I think it simulates the routine pretty well. I also had another thought that enhances things a bit. To wit:

Spec shuffles. You peek the bottom card and then Hindu shuffle force it. Now hold deck FU in LH and peel cards one by one to the right hand as you count out loud. Downjog the mates as you come to them. When you're nearing the third mate, remember the card just before it. That's the only memory in the whole thing. Now turn deck FD and angled up a bit so the injogged cards aren't seen by the specs. Count out loud 1, 2, 3 etc until you come to the first injogged card, say on the count of 12. Stop and say, "Yes. Twelve is correct" as you then deal the mate to the top of the pile. Start a new pile as you continue with 13, 14, etc. Pause a few cards before the injog, you'll be able to see how many more to the mate. Say, "No, not 19. It's 21." Now continue and deal the mate.

Start a new pile and pick up the count 22, 23 etc. This time you know the card just before the mate since you memorized it earlier. Deal until one card before the injogged card and stop. Say, "Yes. First the nine of hearts" as you show the face of the 9H and deal it FD. Continue with "and then the queen (or whatever)." Deal it FU and then flip the top cards of the other two piles FU to show queens. Say, "There were only three queens in the deck. So you must have the fourth one." BLAM.

Mike, I love that way you think. Your participation here at the forum and at our Saturday Sessions is incredibly valuable. Your thoughts on Pseudometry are very smart and I'm going to work on it, using your thoughts and ideas.

JohhnyNewYork, I got to say the same thing about you. I appreciate your generosity in sharing the magic that you've created. You always do it with a spirit of kindness that is infectious.

It sure was a great session. I appreciate those who attended and to each of you who were willing to share something.

Looking forward to next time!!

Rudy

Here's a quick Table of Contents for the session on Saturday.  Some items were not named - please let me know of anything that should be corrected.

Thanks!

Just wanted to say that the version of Holey Terror I did was 'Impromptu Terror' from Power Plays.

Robin, Thanks for the PDF with the information. I just wanted to let you know that in some cases Rudy's last name was misspelled. It is TINOCO and not TINICO. I don't know if you could revise the document to correct this. And THANKS again!

I missed being the first to say this.  Robin, putting together a TOC like that is beyond the call of duty.

I thank you for doing this and wow it has to be a lot of work.

This has now made me think of a question for TMF which does not belong here.  But Robin's hard work sure did its job!

Thank you!!

Hey Guys

Thanks for the corrections and added details for the TOC.  Rudy, I'm sorry about mis-spelling your name - that's really embarrassing.  If it's any consolation, I once spelled my beloved's last name incorrectly (my only excuse is that we had only just met).

Updating the TOC is no trouble at all so if there are other details that need to be fixed or if I left out something that should be included, please let me know.

I'm really glad to know that people find these useful.  Here's the revised TOC for June 17.

Robin

Chi Han, check the e-mail you used to register for the session. Rudy sends the link there. If you don't find it, check the spam folder or some other folder it could have gone into. I use gmail and this time the link went to the "Social" tab instead of the usual "Primary" inbox so I missed the link for 2 days.

If you don't find it, send Rudy a PM or an e-mail and he can send you the updated link for you. I could send you the link but if Rudy does not give you permission to watch the video, you won't be able to watch it.

No need to apologize [smile]

Thanks again!!
