I am performing at NYU on Saturday afternoon, so I may not make the session...but I did register so I can see the video afterward.

Just to let everyone who mighy be seeing this post for the first time know, these are free sessions we do at the forum every second Saturday. We usually talk about magic and show each other a couple of tricks. It's very open and welcoming. More information in this thread: http://www.themagiciansforum.com/post/the-saturday-sessions-8299943

Thanks Chi Han. I'm not sure if I should send an email out to everyone to let them know.

I worry that some folks will be annoyed by too many emails from me. On the other hand, our Saturday Sessions are somewhat new and may require me to over communicate as it becomes common knowledge.

What are your thoughts?

Rudy

I think the sessions should take place and the people who visit the forum will get to know about them and join, no need to be sending messages every time. If they are active and visit the forum often, they will get to read about the sessions and they will join and eventually they will also be participants.

I agree, as long as attendance is good, we don't really need to send out a message.  Although it's such a good opportunity, and for me a great incentive to get into the Inner Circle status.

I agree as well.  Although it would be nice to have some sort of notification, just in case.  Perhaps a PM to those that would typically email?  This way the system could email those people letting them know there is a PM, which in turn has them visiting the site.

Just some suggestions.  I am good with whatever you decide. [wink]

If these sessions become a regular thing every week then I don't see a need to send an email out every time.

Uh oh. I respectfully ask for an email. It's a reminder and it generates a calendar entry.

They make the "Delete" key to vanish the email.

Too many times at least I forget. But my phone and computer have reminders. Corporations would grind to a halt without shared calendars. The email gives us a shared calendar.

My opinion. I agree to whatever is decided.

Is there going to be a "topic" in this session? I think it would be a good idea to have topics for the sessions from time to time so we can prepare something to share. In my local group we used to have this kind of session where everybody would prepare something with a specific topic (e.g. Triumph, Ambitious Card, Coins Across, Matrix, etc.) and it always made for a good session.

We used to have polls to ask for the topic and we would have about a week to prepare something with the winning topic.

Just a thought...

Oh no, I. must. comment. again.

I come from the corporate world.  IBM in fact, but the computer kind.  We used to do "conference calls" all the time (no video).  I had a "rule."  Have to have an Agenda.  This not only let folks know what was going to be discussed so they could prepare, but it also ensured we got to everything.  And if we didn't, we'd
know.  And if something "headed into the weeds, we'd 'take it offline' so it would not be forgotten."

This is not a corporation and please do not think that I believe it should be run as one.  However, there are a few things that are common in this thread which corporate stuff might help.

So, my thoughts but they are just suggestions:
  • Send that email because it'll put something in your computer or phone mail (if you use it)
  • Make an Agenda of items that can be covered
  • Since the sessions are recorded and distributed, taking minutes is automatic, so no one need receive another email with a recap

Regarding polling and what to put in the Agenda... Someone could be the owner of that and receive ideas.  Or, ideas could be posted so they don't get lost.  I don't know if it is possible to create a category within the Session room where people could say "would like to know how to do..." or "I'd like to show my..."  But then all the stuff is memorialized.  And this assumes that only Session members participate, which I think is also an open question.

Someone is going to tell me to shut up.

Nobody is going to ask you to be quiet, tmfbls, as long as we all remain respectful. I think we are brainstorming here in order to be in agreement about what we can do to have the best experience out of TMF.

The one who has the last word is Rudy and I think we can all give ideas and if they are good, they can be used.

Barret, I won't tell you to shut up...hahahaha, but I will kindly disagree. (don't take it personally)

I for one would be totally against an "agenda".  IMO, this defeats the purpose of a "session"  I have been performing professionally for years.  I have sessioned with many, many people over those years. Not once has there been an agenda and there has never been an issue.

For about 10 years straight, every Sunday night, I sessioned with a group of 4 magicians.  We NEVER had an agenda and ever session was always productive.  A session is just a gathering of like minds to brainstorming ideas, showing off something new, to get feedback on something you may be working on, etc.

I don't feel a session is linear by any means.  Setting an agenda tries to make it that and can stifle the actual purpose of session.

With that said, if I were seeking advice, consultation or forming a group to work on a particular show or performance, then I would not be against an agenda, but this is not that at all.

A general topic may be a nice addition every once in a while, but I wouldn't really want to see that at every session thing either.

Just my opinion  [wink]

From my own experience I've noticed that when I session in person with other magicians a topic or theme is never needed to produce a great session.  However when I've had sessions over Skype it tends to be far less productive.  I'm not sure why that happens.  Maybe it's the change in dynamic between live sessions and online sessions.  I think having a topic  will allow us to delve deeper into a subject and have far greater discussions on it since everyone will have had time to research and familiarize themselves with it.  It would also encourage participation.  Maybe the key is just finding balance between the two.  The first half can be focused on a specific topic and the second half can be an open discussion.

Hi Rudy,

since I have no friends I am happy about every email I get and these reminders make me especially happy! Hope I really can join this time!

And I was also thinking about asking for a topic too but I think it will kill the session character and so some fun. If someone has a problem or want to discuss certain things I am more than happy about that but a rigid agenda?! I have enough agenda in my daily life so I find it more inspiring to get different, accidental input and just to see what you are doing/liking/finding/looking/ reading/working (on, for...) at this moment. The surprise factor. I for myself have thought about what I could contribute to these sessions and came to the idea that perhaps some routines from German books could be of interest for some of you and as long as there is real interest I could searching for some stuff...so it´s something similar as an agenda that I gave to me for you but it´s not on a theme (Ace Assembly, oil and water) it could hold up the fun factor for me.

So, to me, reminding emails are welcome,
rigid agenda on tendency no, but no real problem, certain themes/problems somenone is working on and need some input very welcome.

But the main point for me is to meet you awesome guys, have a good time and fun!

Hope to see you on saturday!

Axel

Hi Fellas,

Thanks for all the input.

I think that we'll keep our Saturday Sessions a little more free flowing by not necessarily setting an agenda. With that said, I think that it could be fun to simply post what we plan to share at the session. For example, I want to show you the color changing deck routine that I recently put back in my repertoire after reading a post about a real color changing deck that could be on the market soon.

As we each post what we plan to share, it could lead to a general theme at our gathering.

As to whether or not I send out an email every time we have a session, I think that I'll go ahead and do it for now. These Saturday Sessions are still quite new. Once it becomes common knowledge to our community, I'll stop sending out the emails.

Does that sound ok?

Thanks again!

Rudy

As long as you have an internet connection and a camera attached to your computer you're good to go.

Google Hangouts isn't something that you need to obtain. It's simply the service that I use to host the lectures.

Register and give it a try.

I would suggest that you use the Google Chrome browser.

See you soon!

Here's the video of our session!

Great stuff from Nicolas Pierri, (a invisible deck routine with a regular deck), Mike Powers (a great trick where the aces reveal a selected card) and Craig (an incredibly smart set up for Immaculate Connection). The routine that I shared about the Number 23 has been done by Henry Evans and Howard Hamburg.

Thanks to all who came! For those who didn't...you're missing out on something special [smile]

To be on the movie strip (I think that is what is called) you need to be invited by Rudy. There are only 10 spots there but if you participate actively on the forum, Rudy will get to know you and you may get a spot there...

Robin, the Session takes place on Google Hangouts and it does not take place here. Most likely everybody was on the session and that is why nobody was around.

You need to follow the link Rudy posts for each session (don't forget to register first) and once the session is on, go to the same link and click on one of the 3 buttons there (I click on Google because that is what I use to register for the sessions) and Google takes you to the "Hangout Room" where the session is taking place. For the first time you use it, you will be asked to allow some plugins to run, you need to say yes or you won't see or hear anything. I hope this is clear.

And I hope you can make it the next time there is a session...

Hi Luigi!

Thanks - I did all those things exactly as you said (I also use Google to enter the Hangout) but it was 6:30 EST before I got there ... I got into the room and it said "You are the only one here".

I'm looking forward to seeing the recording of the session anyway.

All the best

You must have just missed us.  It lasted just about an hour and a half.  We started at 5pm EST.

Bulla,

From what I understand, anybody who registers for the session AND is present for it, on or off camera, will get the link to the session.

But let's wait and see if Rudy can chime in and confirm this.

Hey guys, as I missed this session am I right in saying the next session will be in a fortnights time (3rd December). Also because I did not register for this session does this mean I cannot view the session back either?

I've really wanted to make it to these. I've been wanting to share visually some of the things with you guys I've been working on that I've promised to in session room discussions. Of course, I'd also love to see what everyone else is sharing.

The problem is I'm working in the hospital almost every Saturday, so essentially will never (or exceedingly rarely) be available on a Saturday afternoon. Any possibility of every doing these any other days?

Hi all.

I think we are due this weekend for our next session. I hope Robin, Jeremy and others get the opportunity to join us. I'm happy to go a few hours earlier or later if Jeremy or Robin et al.. can join us but of course whatever Rudy chooses is best.

I think there were some discussions about an agenda for the sessions and I think this was decided against. I agree with this, I think the sessions will be best served with an element of freedom and spontaneity.

I think though that Rudy suggested that if we wanted to, we could indicate in advance what we plan on bringing to the party, that might be helpful. I think this is a good idea and therefore...

as part of the ATFUS and subsequent FUFUS discussion by Mike and Rudy, I did mention Mr Lorayne's 'Flying Kings' from Reputation Makers.

I'v emailed Harry this week and he kindly gave his permission for me to present and go through this little gem.  Been practicing for a few weeks and hope to do it justice. I  hope though others feel free to correct/direct and chip in with thoughts on the handling. I'll present it as taught in Reputation Makers.

It would be helpful to have a separate Category called 'Saturday Sessions'.  And then when a user selects that, there would be a thread per Saturday Session Date (Dec 3rd, 2016, etc.).  In that singular instance thread, the first post would be the invite link, as well as any special notes on the meeting.  Perhaps, as has been discussed above, we may have a special guest coming to present something, or we will have a theme.

Then people, if they are attending and it's something where they want to say in advance what they would like to share, they can respond to that particular thread.

And then once the session is complete and the video is done, then the last response on that event thread would be the link to the video.  We could either lock that instance up then, or keep it open, but at least we could then be building a clean method for tracking the events, some of the conversations about each one, and the link to the finished product.

I'm not sure how permissions work on this site, but I know Rudy is already doing tons with this, so perhaps this one area could be assigned as a weekly or so maintenance item for someone on the forums.  So making the new links, etc.

Just my two, or five cents.  Feel free to agree/disagree etc.

Hope everyone is well,
GreenKnight

Here is the link Rudy poster earlier today (Dec. 3, 2016):

Hi Everyone,

Here is the link for the Saturday Session: https://goo.gl/NyAynJ

The fun gets started at 2pm (Pacific). I'll be there to start the session, but can only stay for about 20 minutes.
Because of that my friend, Trini Montes, will be hosting this session!

I expect that you fellas are going to have a great time! I'm glad that it's going to be recorded!

See you soon!
