What's a good way to turn someone down who is wanting you to perform ?

A friend brought her friend with her hoping to get a free palm reading from me. I read my friends palm before and she knows I do mind reading stunts as well. She told me that she would like it if I read her friends palm, so I get in her car, she is going to take me to the lab. I get into the back of the car, I told them both it would be impossible to do a reading in the car.

My friend seems disappointed that I didn't read for her friend.

However, I did do a few verbal forces which didn't hit either.

What do you tell someone that you can't or won't perform, or in my case do a palm reading
for?

Union rules. Palm Readers Local 534 does those on Tuesdays. I could do it tomorrow but that would be overtime so I’d have to charge you.

In the situation you describe, I'd probably try to do something—if not the exact thing they're requesting, whatever else the situation will allow. It sounds like you tried to do that, so obligation fulfilled in my book.

In general, when the person is not currently in the process of doing me a favor, I'm not shy about saying "Maybe another time." A friend should understand that.

There are many ways to address the situation. As a performer of the mystic arts there are different avenues we can follow. Now you mentioned your friend would like it if you did some palmistry but this makes me wonder if the friend really wanted a reading herself?

"Appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak" - Sun Tzu, The Art of War

We are only human and sometimes we may be tired, or appear to be, so we can therefore suggest another time and place would be more suitable. I often think back to David Blaine's 1st Street Magic special when he'd just levitated for Fruit-loop and his friends... after doing the levitation he came over all faint/weak and one of the guys brought him some water to drink.

"Touch magic. Pass it on" - Jane Yolen

Another option we have in relation to palmistry and han-reading is related to the Jane Yolen quote. With a few minutes thought you can create a script relating to the hands, the healing attributes of the human touch, the magic of connection, and so much more. Having the ability to talk about the hands in a broader manner can allow you to redirect the thought processes of those involved and move into more comfortable areas.

Another option is to charge them for the reading 💵

What does your friend do for a living?
Can she come over your house or place of business and provide some of her talents free of charge during her off time?
Can her friend do the same?
Why do you need to be the one giving away services for free?
Are you getting paid, a gig out of the deal, or at least a good dinner?

I have a friend who used to live in New Jersey, when I still lived there.
He would go to a friend's house and the wife would always be asking him to show her some magic.
My friend's wife finally got tired of it and said, "Look. Your husband's a plumber. What if every time you guys came over I asked him to fix a drippy faucet or to check out the kitchen or bathroom plumbing?"
The friend got the point and stopped asking.

"I'd love to, but Magic on Thursday is not allowed."

Only works on Thursday of course. If you can think of a substitute word for Thursday, off you go.
