Bright-light city sure set my soul on fire this week… Less that 1/2 hour after I landed, I found myself seated at a table with Steve Friedberg, Frank Zak, Ed Kwon, Allan Ackerman And a fresh-faced up and comer named Rudy Tinoco.

It was a major hang! Sitting across from the guru Allan Akerman I was repeatedly brain-fried.

Spent lots of quality time with Steve, Rudy and my new friend Frank Zak, a veteran Vegas bar magician and creator.

Tuesday, I spent the afternoon at Paul Vigil’s house listening to Buckethead and watching Paul prep for his Castle engagemant next week.

I got back to the Rio just in time to nab a front row seat for Penn and Teller’s show. This is my second time in two years and they presented nearly all new material. Brilliant!

I extended my stay to attend the Wednesday evening wake for Gary Darwin. When Johnny Thompson heard me mention I was jazz drummer he lit up… “I’m all about the bebop.” He said. I always knew Johnny was cool AF I just didn’t know he was cooler than F.

Alan Ackerman, with that innocent blue-eyed trustworthy face, spent even more time disconnecting my synapses and Jeff McBride, asked me the same question he had when I met him once before… “So, what are you working on?” He is an incredibly sweet cat who makes you feel like you’re the only person in the room.

How I wished that they were more than 24 hours in a day.

Looks like a great trip.  Penn and Teller is one of the few shows that I will watch over and over and never get tired of.

Steve Wow!!! That’s all I can say just Wow!!

I’m a great admirer of Ed Kwon. His castle act is a great modern nod to the classics, a very impressive, knowledgable young magician.

Ed Kwon says he’s 22 but I think he’s actually145 years old.

He certainly does look quite old, standing just behind Rudy's left shoulder in that group shot.

It occurs to me that perhaps...just perhaps...we should (as Rudy intimated) figure out a way that we can get a bunch of folks from this forum together for a weekend somewhere.  Doesn't have to be fancy, and we already have enough members here who are more than capable of serving as speakers/lecturers/whatever.  The real purpose, though, would be to encourage major league sessioning time.

If this sounds like what Lance Pierce has put together with Pebblepalooza, it should.  I've been to several of his confabs, and they absolutely rock.  No reason we couldn't think about doing the same kind of thing amongst us.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Stevie Ray.  What a great time!  Reminds me of what magic gatherings and get-together sessions used to be like back in the mid-1970’s, when I first started taking card magic seriously …
