Greetings all,

I was thinking about the effects that I like to perform and why I like to perform them. Although guilty of liking some tricks that serve as an ego boost, I am trying to get away from that mentality. The effects that bring me joy are ones where the spectator is involved and hopefully gets a sense of wonder.

Being a hobbyist, my range of tricks are limited. But I would have to say that one of my favorites is crazy man's handcuffs when you get someone that has never seen it before. I always watch the spectator's face when I do the second phase where they hold one band. Their reaction is the best and reminds me of how I feel when I see beautiful magic. (I am not saying I am doing beautiful magic - but I am working toward that goal)

What effect brings you joy when you perform it and why? (Covid considerations aside)

Regards,
Mark

Much like you I enjoy the tricks that bring smiles and wonder to the faces of my spectators. to name a few ; color changing handkerchiefs ( learned a long time ago to stop calling them silks). Thumb tip tricks, there are so many.
Sometimes magicians get caught up in doing their favorite tricks and not what the audience enjoys. They're not always the same.

Hi, Pepeq.

I've found the effects that give me the most joy are the ones that get the best reactions. So for me, that's a version of Card to Card Case that I read in The Magic of Matt Schulien (with a Dani Daortiz touch I found online). It gets a reaction of laughter and surprise. To me that's just the best, and, therefore, I get lots of joy out of performing it. In addition, the misdirection's all built in, so it makes it a joy to perform from that point of view as well.

Thanks for the question. Stay safe.

I've been reading and doing a lot of research on the magic of Ascanio lately.

One of his routine is quite demanding and is as tough (to me) as enjoyable to practice.

This is called "The Aces of my exam" :

Disclaimer : This is not me in the video 😉

I love to practice, and practice always brings me joy.

Pepeq, I wasn't going to offer up a specific trick that brings me joy because, performing any trick brings me a certain sense of joy.  But I just responded to another thread and I mentioned something that brings me joy and that is helping other magicians.  Whether offering feedback, suggestions, a substitute move or whatever, whenever I can help someone in their development, I am happy.

Ted Annemann is a big influence in my work and 'A Card in Hand' from Annemann's Miracles of Card magic is a good effect.  I have used this as a starting point to inspire my own version where the card is invisible, and it is a more of a trippy mind reading effect.

However any effect that allows me to create an emotional hook brings me, and those involved, much joy [cool]

I have a few that I just love to perform when I get the chance just because they are so much fun I think. My ambitious card routine, 2 card monte, and Sam the Bellhop are probably my top 3. Obviously we only really do tricks that we enjoy doing, but those 3 are really fun to me.

What a wonderful question Pepeq. My answer took a lot of thought.......gee.......I love them ALL !! I mean I just love performing all types of magic equally........card ,coins, mentalism etc. etc.

As far as what makes me “happy” when I perform ????........I guess it’s when I perform something that I have re-invented by giving it a NEW Personal twist of my own.
To have that feeling after I have performed it.......that what they have just seen .....WAS ALL MINE. An example is my effect called “”Special Delivery”. As long as I have been practicing magic ( over 50 years) every “Bottle productions” being sold, worked upon a similar premise . ( you had to STEAL the bottle ).

When I came up with my new method for “Special Delivery “....... my heart soared !!!........ ( because now the bottle will COME TO ME ) and when I performed it and it worked so smoothly , that’s when I was so very “HAPPY”. So what makes me happy ?...... whenever I can put more of ME into my effects and presentation.

If you haven’t seen “Special Delivery “ ....... I’ve included the vids below.
