I was raised in a little town called South River, NJ - home to some NFL notables such as: Drew Pearson (Dallas Cowboys), Kenny Jackson (Phila Eagles) and Joe Theismann (Washington Redskins). South River is only about 2 miles sq but at one point we were in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the most bars per capita. There used to be bars all over the place. I used to call them old man bars but they were bars that were converted from homes. Now most of them are gone and they're converted back to homes.

I now reside in the Albany NY area.

I'm an original Dead End kid - born and raised on the mean streets of the ghetto of the Lower East Side of Manhattan, NY - right off the East River. There was no FDR Drive then - that was one of the city's garbage dumps. Garbage that eventually became hills/mountains. Those were our playgrounds!   I could write a book!!

Unfortunately no I wasn't able to attend.  I was busy preparing to compete in a chess event that was being held in Vegas the following month.

Hi Mystic12

Welcome to the Forum!  I for one would love to hear about what it is like to be a magician in India.  I imagine it must be very different from being a magician in North America ... but maybe I am wrong.

Hi Robin
I think people enjoy magic in the same way across the globe. However ,the community of magicians is different as compared to America. Here, the street magicians are good storytellers but tricks are satisfactory(card sleights, self working tricks). They spend half an hour in a very simple trick. Whereas most stage magicians are trick machines, they do a lot of tricks in a limited time, while not focusing on entertaining the audiences. Select few magicians are very good like Prof Sarkar and others. I personally like 'Do less entertain more' kind of magic, which is also appreciated by the modern audiences in India and the Western magicians are definitely better at that.
Also, I still haven't seen The great Indian rope trick in India[biggrin]

Welcome Mystic12.

Wonderful you are here. I too would be very interested in magic in India. My only experience of magic in India was the Penn and Teller special. This I expect was ramped up for dramatic effect but the street magic they showed was pretty gory, intriguing, but gory.

I have been reading a booklet by Eddie Joseph who was a well known Indian magician born in 1899. I know the English magician DMC visits India quite regularly.

I'd love to hear more of Prof Sakar and his colleagues.

Regards
Gareth

PS. I'm English/Australian so if you are a cricket fan we can bamboozle these Americans any time you like. I'm a Test match man through and through, no interest in T20.

Thanks Gareth
I agree with you , the Penn and Teller version was a a bit too much [biggrin]
Eddie Joseph is a very respected name among the magic circle especially old timers. I think they even have a ring named after him in Mumbai. Prof. Sarkar is actually famous for his 'Indrajaal' which I have not seen personally but what I gather is old Indian tricks repackaged as black magic but he has actually raised the level of Indian magic from street to stage
Good to see a fellow cricket fan. I too dont like T20,more of an ODI kind of person. See you around [wink]
