Are you wanting to purchase one volume as a start, so you are looking for recommendations on which one?

Here is the contents of the first book, volumes 1-5

Second book, 6-10

You cand find the last two on magicref.net. Amazing resource.

Personally, I'd just pick one. They all are great and feature diverse effects.

As a practical matter, I'd start with Book 2 (6-10) or Book 4 (16-20) because they're the easier ones to find.

If you like it, you'll eventually end up with the others anyway. Might as well dip your toe in with what's most affordable.

If you don't like it don't mention it here!!!  [smile][smile][smile][smile][smile]

Though I don't see what's not to like. Go for the lot if you can find them, and if you can afford them, of course. Failing that, as Chris says, keep looking and get what you can as and when you can.

I have a couple of Volumes 2 and 4.  Cheap, they ain't.  Contact me at harrylorayne@earthlink.net if you want to discuss it.
I also have a couple each of the Deluxe Collectors volumes - they're into the $300 plus area.
