Let's say you've been apointed as the Entertainment Director for the XYZ Corp. Your job is to hire the best acts that you can possibly find to perform for your groups VIP's, shareholders and employee's.
Your also looking for a headliner, a mentalist..to perform in the mainroom. All the big names are booked up, except for two performer's, Derren Brown & Max Maven.
My question to you is..who would you hire Derren or Max? Two totally different styles of mentalism.
And you can't pick yourself to perform either, your the Entertainment Director, not a performer.
Thanks,
Rick-

Derren Brown would be my first choice. Here in the UK he is well known, plus I've seen his stage show and it is brilliant. It would also give me the opportunity to have a chat with him about magic/mentalism... both his books on magic and his video 'The Devils Playthings' are well worth your time, there is a lot to learn from DB.

Interesting question, as are most all of the ones you ask!

I'd opt for Derren Brown probably.  Why?  Because although I like his style, Max Maven is less "real" to me.  His is a character that to me, comes through as a character.  There are some performers who are "doing a character" but it is so seamless, so natural-appearing, that you don't even realize it.  If you see them when they are "out of character" you are usually blown away by the difference.

Max and Phil are very different, but when I watch Max I cannot get past the fact it is Phil in makeup.

You know...If I had to choose and everyone else is booked and these are the only two left...There are quite a lot of not known mentalists that would be just as good.  So, being that I am the entertainment director...I would go with someone unknown, very talented, who will deliver...at a fraction of the cost and I would look like a hero to the talent buyer.   But...if that is not an option to your question, I would go Maven for when the audience sees him, they know they are seeing something or someone they don't see everyday...so his looks do it for the booking.

Impossible to answer. But once we saw Max Maven at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood and there were only a dozen of us in the audience. It was a spectacular show, he read everyone's mind, and he did a design duplication, where my wife drew a picture of what she was thinking of and then he drew the same picture. It was her birthday, she drew a birthday cake, and so did Max. She doesn't know how he did it, and neither do I (not do I want to know). Max was excellent, incredible, fooled everyone. He was everything I've expected plus more. One singular sensation, if you will.

So essentially this is a "who do you like better" question.
I'd hire Max Maven.

If this isn’t a who do you like better question, why bother asking? Shouldn’t there just be one answer then?

I find Max more engaging and entertaining than Derren. What I’ve seen of Derren is very dry and I haven’t been able to make it through one of his specials. With that in mind, I’d hire Max. After all, I AM the entertainment director for XYZ Corp. I also worked for a major pharmaceutical company that was based out of Basel, Switzerland - and those people would have liked Max.

Now, when you’re the entertainment director, feel free to hire Derren. 😎

Because I have hired people.
I've hired people for telephone support on an IT helpdesk, warehouse drivers, warehouse support, haunted house actors, magic entertainers, and burlesque show entertainers.

But I still don't understand how silly my question is, without adding in a third performer as you did in a previous post - please enlighten me Chris Karim.

Ken, in fact, brought it up during a discussion of people being "Derren clones" and he explained it as that is what is marketable for corporate gigs, etc.  As somebody with a full time job, which included over a decade at one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, I can say he is 100% correct.

So, no, this isn't a "who do you like better question." [nono]

Or at least wouldn't be for somebody hiring.  Please, James, correct me if I am wrong.

I like James' approach though.  And if I wasn't limited to Max and Derren, I'd go with David Gerard.  I ran into him waiting for the bus in San Francisco one day, he saw I was reading (coincidence alert) Ken Dyne's book Bairn and struck up a conversation.  I don't watch other performers so I had no clue who he was (which may have offended him, I don't know, oops, lol) but in looking him up and seeing a show of his (it was local and was 1 of 2 mentalism shows I went to in the last 7 years), he's a great performer.

So you don’t watch other performers.
Yet, you’d hire Derren Brown because he’s corporate.

BUT, you’d hire David Gerard over Derren Brown because you ran into David one day - then saw his show (not clear if that was live or YouTube) and thought he was a great performer - in other words: YOU LIKED HIM.

But NO, this isn’t about who you like better.

I suggest we cool things down a notch. Both have had their say and then some. The forum is short on moderators at the moment, I think, so let's be extra kind.

This forum won't remain unique for long if we don't all do our part.
