I think I've posted this question on the green puke place before, but, it's a good open ended question so I'll ask it here.

Why does magic matter ?

What are your thoughts ?

Perhaps it does not.

Why does anything matter?

My answer would be that [magic] matters when it provides purpose and meaning.

Maybe I am a little idealistic, but I believe magic is important because it can (when performed correctly) elicits emotions from the people viewing it. Any art that causes an emotional reaction is important, in my opinion.

One of my favorite speakers on this topic is Kenton Knepper. I highly recommend anything and everything by Kenton! AntiTada is a fantastic resource about this topic.

IMO, there are two components to the question, "Why does magic matter?" (1) The standpoint of the magician, and (2) The standpoint of those for whom the magician performs.

From the standpoint of the magician, it matters simply because it matters to him or her.  He or she derives satisfaction or pleasure from performing (or creating, or writing about, or collecting) magic.  He or she loves to perform or engage in one of the there above-mentioned endeavors; it feels good and brings us brings joy, and that in itself is its own justification, like any endeavor or pastime, whether it be painting, coin collecting, playing music, acting, cooking, working out, gardening, posting on a magic forum - whatever.

From the standpoint of the the audience, however, it only matters if we give them something of value, whether it be entertaining them, involving them, inspiring them, uplifting them, making them laugh, helping them have a great time, making them forget about whatever cares and stresses they may be going through in their lives.

Making it matter to others is up to us.

I'll keep my answer short. I think it matters because it stimulates the imagination of the spectators and also brings a sense of wonder that it's difficult to achieve any other way.

Magic matters if and only if we care and our audiences care.
The amount it matters depends only on the amount we and they care.

Things that don't matter to me: soccer, field hockey, hunting, fishing, polo, golf, y a rd work and stuffed cabbage among other things.
